Coordinated as a group experience for high school students + elementary school classes
Leadership Training + Service Learning + Life Skills
JA High School Heroes provides leadership development opportunities to high school students who deliver JA programs in elementary schools. Elementary school students receive valuable life skills from JA's SOL-aligned, hands-on lessons.
In this program high school students participate in two hands-on leadership trainings that have them thinking through case scenarios, reflecting on their skills, navigating groupwork, and preparing to lead JA sessions with elementary school students. The younger students not only get to welcome "cool teenagers" into their classrooms for a day, they also practice life skills through fun activities that reinforce classroom lessons around money, jobs, and/or entrepreneurship.
Following participation in the program, high school students will be able to:
-- Demonstrate leadership skills.
-- Use strong presentation skills to communicate effectively.
-- Recognize and use techniques that further teamwork and achieve group goals.
-- Recognize the value of constructive feedback and the growth mind-set.
-- Discover an interest in teaching as a career!
And elementary students will be able to:
--Explore topics related to money, jobs, community, and entrepreneurship, appropriate to their grade level
--Practice working in groups and other grade-specific skills
--Grade-level objectives: Kindergarten | 1st Grade | 2nd Grade | 3rd Grade | 4th Grade | 5th Grade
--See high school students from their school in leadership roles (and see themselves in those too!)
