Welcome to Multimedia101! Multimedia 101 is a 6-week online course for middle & high school students. The classes in this course are dedicated to teaching students the fundamentals of multimedia which include journalism, photography, videography & audio production,
Students will be responsible for creating a multimedia report.

- Lined notebook paper for notes & written assignments
- Pens (dark blue & black ink) & Pencils
- Highlighters
Program Learning Outcomes/Objectives:
- To develop skills in journalistic writing by creating content & conducting research.
- To develop skills in visual production by capturing pictures and video.
- To develop skills in audio production by recording audio.
- To learn how to post responsibly & be accountable on social media
- To learn the importance of community involvement & interaction.
- To learn together with respect, responsibility, communication, and cooperation.
Examples of Course Activities:
- Reading, writing, lecture, discussions, hands-on activities, taking photos, and other activities to learn about multimedia.
- Use editing software such as iMovie, GarageBand, Canva, Wix.com.
- Going “on assignment” in their home to take pictures, interview people, conduct surveys and polls, conduct research about people and events, and other duties as assigned.
- Working diligently to complete all assignments before each publication deadlines.
Class Rules and Procedures
- Entering online class: Goto Google Classroom, sign-in, check class stream for announcements, check classwork section and begin warm up. The instructor will start the class after the warm-up. Class may be conducted on live stream via Google Hangouts or Zoom. Video recordings from the instructor may be posted as well.
- During class instruction: Students are expected to remain online and attentive during instruction.
- During project work: Students are expected to remain on task and work cooperatively.
- End of class: Teacher will dismiss students AFTER all information in the lesson is given. The teacher dismisses class, NOT the clock.
- Food/drink: is sometimes permitted during the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of the session. NEVER have food or drinks near equipment or the computers.
- Classroom Behavior Rules:
- Treat others with respect.
- Work cooperatively
- Keep on task.
- Give the instructor your undivided attention
- Behavior Consequences: - 1st offense = warning, 2nd offense = phone call to parent, 3rd offense = removal from program
General Information
- Restroom: Students are encouraged to use the restroom before coming to class. If you need to be excused, please ask.
- Assignments: Being late in journalism usually means the story can’t be published. Some assignments must be completed and turned in by the due date in order to be considered for publishing. Late assignments may not be approved for publishing.
- If absent: Students should make up the work that was missed. Only work completed promptly will be given credit. All work & assignments will be posted in the iMAP Google Classroom. It is the responsibility of the student to find out the work that was missed.
- Cheating: will not be tolerated. Any work in violation of will result in the removal from the program.
- Use of iMAP Website: If applicable, each student on the website team will have access to the iMAP website through creating their own Wix account & being granted access. Using the website the student will be able to design pages, write stories, insert photos, update the blog and get online help. Students will be able to use any internet enabled computer, iPad or Android device. When using an iPad, you must use a Flash enabled browser. iMAP recommends the Google Chrome browser. Please do not share access with students not in the program. Students site usage will be monitored. If use of the site is abused, students’ account privileges will be disabled.
- Need help? Please ask for help during class. If students want extra time to work on assignments, projects, or additional help outside of class, just ask. Instructors are happy to organize “study halls” for students to get extra help or more work.
- Attributes of a Model Student. A model student will be a positive leader, ignore off-task behavior, solve problems independently, bring all required materials to class, cooperate well in groups, participate often if called upon and make thoughtful comments, be on time and immediately begin warm-ups upon arrival to class.
- Assessments: Students' work will be assessed using a 5 Star Rating System. Students that successfully complete the Multimedia 101 program will receive a Completion Certificate. Students that complete the program averaging an assessment of 4 or more stars will receive additional recognition. Work to be assessed include:
- Assignments: Successful on-time completion of:
- audio and/or video reports,
- photography and/or videography assignments,
- writing and/or editing of stories or articles,
- creating & organizing website layouts,
- designing graphics,
- posting & updating social media for the various publications/productions
- Quizzes: Periodic quizzes will be announced.
- Tasks: Student progress and work on-task will be assessed weekly and/or monthly.
