Chen:2010:TVCG

In their 2010 TVCG paper, Chen and Jaenicke showed a time series plot and its corresponding binary-digitals view (as shown on the right). They noticed the apparent “inefficiency” of visualization from the perspective of data compression, and suggested that "application of information theory to visualization needs to accommodate and address a different emphasis." Building on the brief and hesitant analysis by Chen and Jaenicke, Chen and Golan offered an explanation about the phenomenon, in the context of disseminative visualization, using the cost-benefit ratio proposed in their 2016 TVCG paper.  As illustrated in the figure below, they estimated the time cost and information-theoretic benefit quantitatively, and evidenced that the time series plot is more cost-beneficial than the binary-digits view .

As the IVAS methodology was formulated based on the cost-benefit ratio, here we reanalyze the two visual representations using the IVAS methodology.
