Abstract Reasoning

From Symptoms to Causes

Abstract Reasoning is a methodology for visual analytics (VA) researchers and practitioners to deliberate many different possible causal relations. This page is for supporting the reasoning about the causal relations between symptoms and causes. For reasoning about the causal relations between causes and remedies and between remedies and side-effects, please visit the corresponding pages.

How to Use the Adjacency Matrix Below?

  • Consider a noticed symptom and identify its corresponding abstract entity on the left.
  • Look across the row horizontally and see the purple symbols for likely causes.
  • Check to see whether any of these causes may be applicable to the symptom concerned. You may use the list of Concrete Entities as prompts.
  • Take the second scan of the row to consider the possible and rare causes.
