Our Mission: To foster a culture within our program that is committed to facilitating impactful collaborations, engaging with various populations, and using mindful practices to strengthen our recruitment process, teaching practices, and patient care.
Our program has a resident committee dedicated to Strategic Engagement
The goals of the committee are to promote educational curricula highlighting health inequities, systemic and structural racism, social justice, and bias elimination.
We have been incorporating health equity topics into PGY-2 Journal clubs and plan to continue to have guest lecturers speak about the intersectionality of health equity and medical research during noon conference.
We are also planning to create an informal mentorship program for IUSM students from all backgrounds through residency interview preparation and clerkship guidance.
We are focused on developing partnerships with active IUSM organizations including GME Strategic Engagement Committee and the IU Multicultural Physicians Alliance.
Indianapolis is a diverse community. The city demographics are composed of 53.5% White, 29% Black or African American, 10.4% Latiné or Hispanic, 3.7% Asian, and 4.2% two or more races. Since 2010 the Black or African American, Latiné or Hispanic, and Asian populations have continued to expand.
We also feel it is important to acknowledge the many limitations/flaws of the census system as related to race, ethnicity, ancestry and one's personal identity. We acknowledge that each individual applicant, resident, and patient are a unique blend of identities and we are dedicated to supporting all individuals at our program. This is one of the reasons our application review process is holistic.

The largest refugee group in Indiana consists of Burmese people, who account for more than 60-80% of all arrivals since 2007 (from 2022).
