Both the Med-Peds and Categorial Programs have strong local community organizations with whom we partner. Our Advocacy & Outreach Committee plans events every other month for residents to volunteer. Here are just some of the incredible organizations we work with (we have linked their websites so that you can learn more): Indiana Family to Family, Crooked Creek Food Pantry, Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc, La Plaza Indy, Julian Center, Indiana Diaper Bank, VOICES, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.
All residents also complete a pediatric Community rotation where they spend a month directly visiting/working with community organizations that serve our patients.
Lastly, each year our program fundraises and shops for a family as part of the Angel Tree Program.
The Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic is a free clinic that provides primary care-based medical, dental, social and legal services for the uninsured and underserved in the Indianapolis community. Led by IU School of Medicine, this clinic strives to close the health care gap in the community by coordinating a medical presence to address a wide variety of conditions. The IU Student Outreach Clinic is open every Wednesday from 5PM – 8PM and Saturday from 10AM – 2PM.
Some of our residents serve as preceptors for the clinic when they are on ambulatory or consult months.
Here are some of our residents participating in a demonstration around female reproductive rights.
Black Worldschoolers Mobile Bookstore is an Indy-based mobile bookstore traveling the Midwest with curated stories from Black authors. They were able to visit our children's hospital and hand out free books to all patients.
Our residents are very passionate about advocacy and are encouraged to participate in advocacy on an individual basis. From letter writing campaigns to peaceful demonstrations to media interviews, our residents fight for issues in which they are passionate. We also believe advocacy involves everyday actions, such as supporting black owned restaurants during noon conferences on the pediatric side.
Many of our residents participate in the Good Trouble Coalition, a grassroots coalition of Hoosier healthcare and public health stakeholders who collaborate to educate, empower, and facilitate political advocacy to improve life in Indiana in the areas of patient-centered care, public health, and social justice.
