As the third oldest Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program and the largest with 56 residents, Indiana University School of Medicine is one of the premier Med-Peds training programs in the nation. Since its inception in 1982, 390 physicians have graduated to become leaders in health care throughout the state, across the country, and around the world. Educational, clinical, and scholarly opportunities within the IU School of Medicine system are truly unparalleled. From individualized career planning to cutting edge collaborative research and global health, the Med-Peds program takes residents where they want to go in their future career.
Our residents possess diverse backgrounds and bring their individual skills to further strengthen the program as we strive to train gold-standard physicians. The IU Med-Peds residency is firmly integrated within the categorical programs and well-respected across the medical campus. Although we are relatively large in number, we provide balance and ample social opportunities to develop the feel of a smaller program.
Each year, the Med-Peds residency program accepts 14 interns. Half of each class begins their training in medicine, the other half in pediatrics, with each group rotating every 4 to 5 blocks. At the end of a successful 16-month internship period, residents are prepared to lead a team and assume supervisory responsibilities.
You have been selected to interview at IU based on your strong medical school performance and personal assets. We hope that you will strongly consider joining our program in 2026. Our residents and program believe in hard work, clinical excellence, diverse representation, inclusivity of all, presence in the community, and patient advocacy. We hold personal integrity and professionalism as our defining qualities. Our faculty are leaders in their fields and provide direct teaching, graduated independence, and expedite your growth as a physician. We are looking forward to meeting you and sharing the breadth and depth of opportunities that await you here at IU. Please ask questions and have a wonderful (virtual) visit.
"The strengths of the program have always been its size and scope, the successful integration of both departments, the diversity of our residents’ backgrounds and interests, and the quality of our faculty and our clinical experiences."
Tim Brady MD
Program Director

We are so excited to meet all of you! Since interview season is now virtual & you do not get the chance to interact with all of our amazing residents, allow us to introduce ourselves...
I knew that I wanted to train at a med/peds program that had a strong medicine and pediatric presence because I truly want to take care of both populations in my career. That was the main reason I was drawn to IU— so I could have a wealth of experience with a standalone children’s hospital that serves the entire state and several state of the art hospitals practicing cutting edge adult medicine. As someone interested in community health, I was excited to learn about all the opportunities IU med/peds gave residents to explore global + domestic community health. I knew when I applied that I wanted to go to Kenya for two months as part of the AMPATH program and take care of immigrant and refugee populations here at Eskenazi Hospital. It also really helped that the residents I met on interview day were exceptionally kind and welcoming!
So many things about IU Med-Peds caught my eye! The people I interacted with on my interview day and now the people I interact with every day are definitely what I love most about our program, community, and family. The variety of clinical sites that we rotate through allow us to experience so many different perspectives of healthcare and allow for us to interact with an incredibly diverse community of people. With a large class and program, you'll never go a day without seeing a fellow Med-Peds resident. The support, kindness, and laughs that we share create the best of friendships.
Having the largest residency class means I ALWAYS have a co-resident free to hang out after a long shift/week and there’s always a senior or graduate who I can seek advice with for my career interests. As a medical podcast junkie, we have awesome weekly conferences that have featured IU Med Peds grads including “Kidney Boy” Dr. Joel Topf and Dr. Chris ”The Chiu Man” Chiu from The Curbsiders. The volume, diversity, and level of care offered from our 5 hospitals on a single campus is, in my opinion, unmatched. Our Global Health and Morris Green programs offer remarkable opportunities. Finally, I love Indy! Incredible food, drink, sports and culture, something fun to do any night of the week, it’s extremely affordable, and there’s no traffic! When evaluating programs in my residency search, I always ended up thinking back to my interview day with IU. That’s how I knew it was my dream program!
