Evidence of Service Competencies

To meet expectations for the service competency, I participated in a summer internship with my school district's Curriculum and Instructional Technology department. I conducted professional development presentations for teachers described in learning design component. Also, I performed 100+ hours of service designing TEKS-based curriculum for #STEMnation Dash Coding Robot Project. Moreover, I assisted in research and design of Library Collection Development Revitalization Project.

Library Collection Development Revitalization Project

The Library Collection Development Revitalization project involved the evaluation and design of a plan of action to weed and purchase books for elementary and middle school libraries that are extremely outdated (average 1990s).

Library Instructional Plan Committee

I also participated in the Library Instructional Plan reconstruction committee. We re-evaluated the library framework that our district requires librarians to complete monthly based on the new adoption of library standards.

Competency Development and Plans of Action

Through my summer internship and my own experience creating these activities described in the learning design competency, I feel that my service competency is developed. I would like to continue to further my professional career by collaborating with the Curriculum and Instructional Department, Library Science, and Bilingual Department in the future to support academic achievement (Reiser & Dempsey, 2018). To improve in my service competency I intend to continue presenting on how to educational technology can support student language development and academic achievement, and how to leverage literacy skills in the library with these tools. Regarding a specific timeline, my immediate career goals of becoming an curriculum and instructional technology (CIT) coordinator or director of CIT do not require specific experience in service learning of educational technology. Therefore, my development in this competency has been met for the immediate future, and as such, my timeline for professional growth is within the next 5-10 years. During this time, I would like to apply to set up a Little Free Library for students in our low-socioeconomic areas. I plan to collaborate with our high school's woodshop classes to construct the structure, and utilize grant proposal submission funds to improve literacy opportunities by purchasing books and devices for students to take home. This will allow me to gain more service experience within second language acquisition and educational technology, and promote my end goal of adjunct faculty at our local university or online curriculum director in 20+ years.
