Evidence of Scholarship Competencies

My scholarly competency efforts directly fit into my life-long research agenda of improving the quality of education for Hispanic, English language learners through the exploration of the effects of interactive mobile technology. Through my continuous research and grant writing, I aim to identify and promote research-based software interventions that improve learning for Hispanic, English language learners who are at a greater risk of low academic achievement. I believe I have garnered an appropriate baseline to improve from. It is in this competency which I feel I am lacking, despite my overall work experience in this field. I plan to continue adding to this component of my repertoire by submitting presentations for Screencastify and Flipgrid at our local TCEA conference.

Submitted-Unawarded

Although it was unawarded, I plan to make a few corrections and resubmit in the Dollar General grant for Youth Literacy programs. This grant will serve as the foundation of the new submission, but with a few alterations specific to the new grant's requirements. It is however, not available for submission until February.

Leadership Development

"Nuremberg Principle IV:

The fact that a person acted pursuant to an order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him." pg. 65

"I will need that order in writing..." pg. 74

I plan to continue to develop social capital to gain resources and network with people. Not only is social media a great communication method for distance education, but for professional development and career advancement through networking (Bozkurt, Karadeniz, Kocdar, 2017; Guo, Shen, Li, 2018; Hampton & Gruenert, 2008).

Competency Development and Plans of Action

I have been a member of TCEA since 2015 and attend their yearly conference that is local. Several of the initiatives in my library and campus originated from their workshops. However, I would like to get beyond the status of just being a member and attending conferences to finding the courage to present research, as this will further my professional career (Reiser & Dempsey, 2018). To improve in my scholarship competency I intend to submit presentations to our local TCEA conference, which I have designed and presented at district staff professional developments during my summer internship. To prevent redundancy, I only included them in the learning design competency. Furthermore, I intend to continue to develop research regarding interactive mobile technology and the impact is has on the Hispanic, English language learner population. I am working on a pilot study to evaluate Flipgrid and Screencastify on speaking modalities of second language acquisition. This research will be submitted to professional journals for future publishing. Regarding a specific timeline, my immediate career goals of becoming an curriculum and instructional technology (CIT) coordinator or director of CIT do not require publication. Therefore, this competency is not a priority, and as such, my timeline for publication or presentations is within the next 5-10 years. This will allow me to gain more experience in the research and publication process, and promote my end goal of adjunct faculty at our local university or online curriculum director in 20+ years.
