We want to enjoy our trip instead of rushing through all the sightseeing spots. Rick Steves' Heart of Italy tour is in perfect pace for us. We started with Rome with all the famous buildings and monuments, then heads to Volterra in Tuscany for some wine and olive oil tasting, and chill out by the ocean at Cinque Terre for a relaxing day. At end, visit Florence for all the art masterpieces. Each day we have half days free time for exploration. We visited a lots of places during the trip, meanwhile did not get overwhelmed.
The capital of Italy. Upon arriving, it feels familiar as you walk down the cobblestone roads yet still energetic and brand new. As you walk through the urban alleyways and crowds, it feels just like a metropolitan with centuries of rich history. You stare at each building wall and wonder what stories they hold. There’s so much to explore down each street, the shops and stands, restaurants, and each amazing attraction. When night falls, the entire city changes with a whole new side of it explore. Because Italians don’t care what time of day it is, they just want to enjoy life and its infectious. I see people like teens, seniors, and adults all enjoying the Italian nightlife which soon makes a nightlife addict out of them. Riding on electronic scooters through the streets, late night drinking at restaurants, exploring the monuments like the Forum or Colosseum. It’s a perfect introduction to Italian culture and its charmful atmosphere.
Joy in the mountains. We then take a break from the bustling urban city of Rome and head to the secluded town up in the mountains, though still bustling with people. Volterra greatly reminded us of the same homey feeling from our own neighborhood. It’s simple, humble, yet teeming with excitement around every corner. There are shops with local produce and souvenirs made by people who’ve crafted them with detail and care. It’s a great place to escape from the crowds and noise, but also enjoy the Italian landscape.
Oceanside paradise. Then we go to the beach side town of Cinque Terre where we can just relax as the sun shines and waves crash. It’s a real pleasure just to explore the alleyway between the bright multicolored buildings with passageways that can lead you to a new shop or restaurant, or even the green hills with lemon trees. The ones that are the perfect places to watch the sunset over the sea.
Kingdom of Delight. Florence is quite similar to Rome in its bustling city vibes but there are still some difference. Florence seems more elegant. With this being the birthplace of the Renaissance, you expect nothing less as you can almost feel the new ideas of old turn into electricity in the air. An energy that fills you up just like in Rome. One that makes you want to explore far across the great city, and stay up all night on the roof past sunset.
