Hey Julie, why are your rates a bit on the high side????
Short answer: Well, we’ve all heard “You get what you pay for”.
I’m not just a babysitter. Your little love will be well cared for, will never go home dirty or hungry, and all the kiddos ask when they get to come back. You will extremely rarely wonder and ask how they’re doing because I provide lots of updates with pictures. I’ve created a safe and fun childcare where mommas can relax knowing their little loves are in good hands and focus on work.
Long Answer:
Well, this is my source of income to help support my family. Unfortunately when I took a break from my career, I also gave up being the breadwinner. I wish this was just “extra income”, but it’s not.
I’ve invested THOUSANDS of $$$ into making a fun and safe space for the kiddos. Yes, this was mostly brought on by our unexpected construction in our basement on Thanksgiving, but I feel I’ve gone the extra mile into making the areas as safe and nice as we can afford at the moment, and there’s still more work to come! I’ve invested in more playpens, toys, cameras, baby proofing, etc. for my childcare.
This is my family’s home, and as much as we love your kiddos, it can affect my family’s comfort, house cleanliness, and there’s a great potential for broken items, varying from toys to furniture. So many of the items we bought for my son, Anders, is now being used in the daycare, and he’s having to share a large majority of his toys with other kiddos.
I’m super flexible, resulting in some days I’m providing childcare for 12+ hours. I don’t necessarily get breaks, and many times I even have to leave the door open and put in a baby gate to use the bathroom. Even after the last babe goes home for the evening, I’m still cleaning up messes and toys and resetting for the next day, and possibly meal prepping too. Sundays are clean the house day, meal planning, shopping and prepping, washing all childcare linens, resetting the childcare room, and planning activities for the upcoming week.
It’s awesome being my own boss, but that doesn’t leave me with any sick days, vacation days, or benefits. It’s very different than a typical job. And while I don’t have any childhood education experience, I have a Masters Degree in safety and fire prevention, and I worked my way through college as a nanny, including caring for children with special needs.
Anyways, to make this work and to continue to provide childcare, I have to make it financially work for myself and my family too, as well as have a little extra for more improvements and fun stuff for the kiddos.
