Project Aim

To analyze the intensity measures on a single degree of freedom system and its response to earthquakes of varying magnitudes. Further, these intensities are grouped according to the correlation weightages.

Work Done

  • Studied on single degree of freedom system and its responses to earthquake loading.
  • Undertook around 30 intensity measures.
  • Came up with Matlab codes to calculate each on these.
  • Selected three earthquakes that occurred in India and collected the ground motion data for each of these with various stations.
  • Studied on how each of the intensity measures vary with stations and distances for the three earthquake episodes.
  • Found out the correlation between the various intensity measures and grouped them accordingly.
  • Suggested ways to obtain a compound intensity measure for the earthquake risk calculation.

Future Scope

At present, the calculations of earthquake intensity and its risk are done using peak ground acceleration. But this is just one of the many intensity measures of an earthquake. This study is an attempt to suggest ways to obtain a compound intensity measure that can club various other intensity measures along with the conventionally used intensity measure (peak ground acceleration). This will improve the quality of earthquake intensity calculation and it turn provide more knowledge to enable us to stay better protected.
