For this project I immediately knew I wanted to do something feminism related as soon as I saw the section posted. Political / feminist pieces that are trying to make a change are my favorite. I love the idea of being able to convey a message like that through a piece of art.
When thinking of what message to focus on for this piece I was inspired by the recent Victoria Secret fashion show and how my backlash and complaints people had for the models that walked on the runway this year. I saw complaints about skin color, weight, overall looks, etc. I then thought about the constant push to look a certain way and to look "perfect".
With this in mind, my goal was to create the perfect women. I wanted to literally create a whole different person made up of different parts to touch on the fact that no one is truly perfect. In order to achieve this you would have to create it. I wanted it to have a retro almost surreal vibe and a collage look. I initially wanted it to look more uniform but I think the fact that it doesn't really look like an actual person fits with the message.
I wanted to cut out pieces from magazines to have a more authentic look but it was hard to find images that worked the way I wanted. It was also hard to find images that fit this look online as well so the "perfect" model looks a bit more modern and not straight out of an old magazine.
(the images are the inspo and the vibes I was trying to go for)
For this project I took inspiration from last weeks section (feminist work). I always loved seeing other pieces that made an impact so I wanted to try and make my own. I took some inspiration from Martha Rosler, Barbara Kruger and other artists as well. My goal was to create the perfect woman by pieces different parts together. This speaks on how woman are expected to look a certain way and thats kind of what I went for.
I was hoping to make everything look a bit more unified but it was difficult to find images that I wanted / liked. Thats part of the reason for the 4 variants throughout the piece. When I was trying to mess with the layering and color of the arms specifically, I noticed I could change how it interacted with this background. I like how this made the piece look a bit more uniform as it blends into the background instead of staying on the surface.
Overall, Im happy with my piece however, I wish I had more time to cut the pieces out by hand. This was my original goal but I had a hard time finding old magazine (which is the vibe I was originally going for) especially ones that had images that I needed.
