• Safety is a major issue when it comes about the subway. Its reflected in many ways such as, unsafe Railroads, Rickety tracks which is a result of lack of maintenance, and overcrowding.
• Safety is another major issue that must need to be addressed. Safety is not just about thefts in the subways, but unsafe railroads, rickety tracks, and overcrowding. When it comes about railroads, I feel that it’s very unsafe for people because there is not gate or fence that actually separate the train with the people and the waiting area. In addition, that is kind of dangerous because people are always waiting very close to the railroad and sometimes they are not even paying attention to what is happening around them. For instance, someone can push and throw a person in the railroad while the train is approaching, someone can fall down by accident, or even the train can have a malfunction and derail from the railroad. All of these cases can happen because of the unsafe way that the subway is set up, I feel that they should have a safer way for the people to wait such as, a gate with an appropriate distance to the train when open after the train already stopped.
• Another concern when it comes about safety is the rickety tracks which is due to the old infrastructure of the subway. The rickety tracks often cause breakdowns and mechanical failures. All the parts are very old but the MTA can no longer buy replacement parts from the manufacturer. As a result, they have to refurbish the parts by themselves. The rickety tracks is a sign of overused and poor maintenance of the system.
• Overcrowding made the safety worse because more people are commuting and using the NYC system as their main way of transportation. In the past few years, there are more passengers than previous years. Last year, the ridership of people using subway was about 1.7 billion (Arkady Buk; New York crime lessens above ground but the subway makes up for it. (2018)) The overcrowding is one of the major reason of the subway’s delay and breakdowns.

Unfortunately, the MTA said that they will need about $20 billion to renovate, maintenance, and repair all the damage on the subway but there is not enough source to get the required amount in order to renovate the NYC subway.
