Common Reed is not a species of concern in North America. In their native habitat, there is some decline due to the economic value of selling the plant. Since it is an invasive species, there are many methods of eradication that have been used to help stop the spread of phragmites. North Carolina has tried flooding, draining, cutting, burning, mowing, and insects. These methods work for a short time but were not helpful overall in the eradication of the species. Currently, they are using the herbicide Glyphosate. This herbicide has its own set of environmental impacts, so it has to be used with care. In Nantucket, they have tried to manipulate the salinity levels and have found that with higher salinity levels, invasive phragmites are declining in health and dying. At the moment, many research efforts are still trying to find effective ways to eradicate phragmites.
