Island Dog Rescue

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the responsible care and humane treatment of animals in Caribbean communities. We ensure shelter for animals and enable adoption programs for orphaned animals from the Caribbean islands to homes in the United States.

Our Programs

VETERINARY CARE

All rescues need basic veterinary care but some need more treatment for major injuries.  The good news is there are great vets who are reasonably priced on island.  The average cost to get a healthy dog ready for transport to include spay/neuter is about $250-300.  Not all dogs come spay/neutered though.

TRANSPORTATION TO ADOPTERS AND PARTNERS

This is key to helping with a solution to the problems of the islands. With already overwhelming numbers,  it is difficult to stay motivated mentally and physically impossible to stay viable if our rescues and shelters can not move the animals they have given so much care to off to a place that adopts out animals.  It is the model they use in the southern states, but more problematic since we are moving them from an island.  Fortunately, we have this job down pat and, while a bit more expensive, the low-cost medical care helps balance the fees. Transportation is about $150 per dog.  Ground transportation is the most expensive part, driving the dogs up I-95 from Miami FL.

LOW-COST SPAY AND NEUTER

As cute as the dogs are, we wish there weren’t so many.  Too many die from starvation, automobiles, and to put it bluntly, neglect.  We believe in addressing an issue at its core and one of those components is spay and neuter.  Not only does it stop an unwanted animal population, but it makes for a healthier and happier dog.  Puerto Rico doesn't spay/neuter anything under 4 months so often puppies must be fixed once they arrive and are adopted in the states.  We will help set adopters up with low-cost options where they live.

ADOPTIONS

This is the happy ending to the beginning.  We always say, “when you adopt an island dog, you get a lifelong pen pal”.  These rescuers and fosters are deeply vested in their roles.  They spend a lot of time and their own money in prepping the animals for adoption.  They care about the ending they helped to create.  All our dogs come with vet paperwork that gives the name of the dog, and the rescuer/foster’s information (so you can stay in touch!).  Our adoption fees are $395 so we barely break even, but we try our best to save as many dogs as possible.  Donations are always welcome.
