The collection was assembled by Fran Hughes over 70 years beginning with the first sand he collected as a Marine on Okinawa in World War II. The final collection of over 700 samples represents years of travel and gifts from friends. Several samples include an American flag pin.
Barren Lake is an impoundment of the Little Barren River. The sand contains fossil Ordovician crinoid fragments.
