There are numerous nearby state parks for hiking and rivers for fishing, and coastal cruises leave directly from the port. Light plane trips to see the Kodiak bears or those hunting salmon in the Brooks river during fat bear week are available as well. The Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage is an ideal setting for discussing science with colleagues and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
