And Still I Rise
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Welcome!
Established at the University of Memphis in 2022, the iRYSE Lab seeks to promote the well-being of racially minoritized youth and young adults through amplifying their voices through research and advocating for more inclusive and equitable spaces.
The iRYSE Lab is a space where individuals who are passionate about research, equity, advocacy, and uplifting marginalized communities come together.
Our work includes and spans beyond:
School racial climate - Understanding how racism functions within schools and how to to alter the school environment to promote well-being and positive development for racially minoritized youth.
Peer racial socialization - Examining the messages that peer verbally and non-verbally communicate about race and culture and how these messages impact youth.
Critical consciousness - Understanding how youth become aware of racial oppression and move towar (or away from) engaging in actions that enervate or dismantle systems of oppression.

And Still I Rise
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
