BalloonSat Launch
On March 15th, we'll be launching our high-altitude BalloonSat from Bakersfield, CA! Our team will be taking a day trip to collect data regarding local Ozone/UV levels in the area. We're incredibly excited to execute the culmination of months of satellite-engineering progress.
Ozone density map of our predicted launch path (where red areas are more concentrated, and yellow areas are less concentrated!)
Stay tuned for further updates and social media announcements of this exciting trip :)
Our BalloonSat Progress
Our project's focus, as a reminder from the last few newsletters, has been made with careful consideration of the gaps in current atmospheric research.
Our research question: How do regionally altered stratospheric ozone profiles contribute to UV-driven photochemical ozone formation, as a pollutant, near ground-level?
As for our very last BalloonSat subsystem level updates, software finalized code for the LoRa hardware using Meshtastic and ordered additional materials for telemetry. Structures has been working on integrating our sensor compartments in the payload and finalizing our parachute system.

Hawaii International Education Conference
From January 9th-11th, the WiSE team attended the Hawaii International Education Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. As the only high school presenter group, we shared a slideshow detailing our mission and engineering efforts, emphasizing our approach towards revitalizing STEM inclusivity and education. Other than presentations, we attended insightful round table sessions and gained robust international connections amongst educators and educational researchers. In this way, the conference was a hub for interdisciplinary STEM collaboration across geographic boundaries. For instance, our team forged a collaboration with Campbell High School, Hawaii, to host a virtual catapult-making activity at their women in STEAM event on February 11th!

WiSE Summer Camp: Resounding Success
Taught by the first all-girls high school CubeSat team in the world, the 2025 WiSE Summer Camp taught 30+ middle school girls about fundamental aerospace engineering principles through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, with over 4 hours of instructional time. Designed for all skill levels and for students with diverse interests, instructional time featured applications of Python programming, as well as hardware training through soldering and circuit activities. Each day of camp built on the last, culminating in a final capstone project that students presented in a professional conference style and a real Edgefly model CubeSat.
View the students' capstone presentations here; in groups, they were able to ideate their own CubeSat mission ideas and gain the skills to pitch these thoughts to the scientific community.
Group 1 - Kaavya, Shagnika, Svana, Avani, Yashaswini
Group 2 - Jeevika, Tanvi, Aadhirai, Riya, Adhvika, Siya
Group 3 - Soumya, Saathvik, Jinam, Rishab, Diksha

What is WiSE? A Formal Introduction to Irvington’s new Women in Satellite Engineering Initiative
A project under Irvington’s Girls in STEM Club, WiSE is the rebranding of the first CubeSat team of Irvington, which launched a satellite in December 2024 (more info on our linktree!) Not only has our methodology changed from launching a Satellite into space to launching a payload attached to a high-altitude balloon (called a BalloonSat), but we have also become an all-girls high school team, truly empowering women in STEM fields. This shift was made with careful consideration, and we can’t wait for this new phase of our project to grow! Stay tuned for a rebranding of our website to feature our new WiSE team as well. We welcome new members to join our team of 20+ Irvington students! High schoolers can fill out our rolling membership form to do so.

Our Mission for the 2025-2026 School Year!
As we have progressed through the initial planning phase for the new BalloonSat Initiative, we have finalized our mission idea for the upcoming school year. This mission idea was made with careful consideration of the gaps in current atmospheric research.
We will be researching ozone and UV reaction dynamics in different layers of the atmosphere. This approach will validate existing models and shed light on stratospheric ozone depletion/tropospheric ozone formation.
Stay tuned for a more specific research question and hypothesis coming soon! We welcome any input you all have for our mission, simply reply to this email.
