A great youth coach is not measured only by wins.
At the Iowa Park Optimist Club, coaching means creating an environment where athletes can learn, compete, make mistakes, improve, and belong.
Our coaches help teach:
Sportsmanship
Confidence
Teamwork
Responsibility
Effort
Respect
Resilience
Sport-specific skills
You do not have to be a former college athlete or professional coach.
You need to be willing to learn, communicate, follow IPOC standards, and put the kids first.
THEY MAY FORGET THE SCORE.
THEY WON’T FORGET HOW THEIR COACH MADE THEM FEEL.
A few hours of your time can become a season a child remembers for years.
Help athletes understand the sport, develop their skills, and discover the confidence that comes from improvement.
Coaching connects families, athletes, volunteers, and neighbors around something positive.
Wins are great. Growth matters more. Help athletes learn how to work, respond, communicate, and keep going.
IPOC is building coach support around clear rules, training, resources, practice ideas, communication, and people you can ask for help.
You are not expected to walk into the gym on Day One knowing everything.
You are expected to be willing to learn.
🧰 Coach Resources →
Development, safety, fairness, encouragement, and age-appropriate competition come before an adult’s ego or win-loss record.
Correct athletes without humiliating them. Communicate clearly. Model the behavior you expect from the team.
Coaches are responsible for understanding the rules and procedures for their sport and division.
Keep parents informed about schedules, expectations, changes, and team information.
Bullying, intimidation, harassment, retaliation, discrimination, and inappropriate conduct do not belong in youth sports.
Practices and games depend on coaches being prepared, communicating early, and following through.
I would make this visually different — maybe a dark navy block.
For coaches, the current IPOC background-check fee is $20.
No court access until cleared.
Coaches must also follow all applicable IPOC safety, bench, supervision, facility, emergency, and participant-protection requirements.
Then a small line:
Approval to coach is not automatic simply because an application is submitted.
That protects us without making the whole page sound hostile.
Tell us about yourself, the sport/division you are interested in, and your coaching experience — including no previous experience.
Complete the required background-check process and any other required eligibility steps.
IPOC confirms coach eligibility and placement based on program needs and available teams.
Review your rules, coach training, resources, schedules, contacts, and expectations.
Teach. Encourage. Communicate. Compete. Help your athletes grow.
From our youngest divisions learning the very beginning of the game through older athletes developing more advanced play, basketball coaches help build skills one practice at a time.

And yes — both sports should visually show boys AND girls wherever we use athlete imagery.
