I was born in Athens on May 9, 1970, as the eldest child in the family of Antonios Io. Panagiotopoulos (a Teacher of Realigious and lawer, originally from Tourkoleka, Arcadia) and Stamatina Panagiotopoulou - Liosi (from Athens). I have been married Kalliopi Kanira, and we have two children, Antonis and Tina.
I attended the 1st Kindergarten, the 15th Primary School, the 2nd Junior High School, and the 2nd Senior High School in Ilion, completing my secondary education at the 4th Senior High School of Athens.
I studied Theology at the Faculty of Theology, Theological School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1989–1993).
I earned a Master of Arts (by thesis) in Patristics and Church History from the Department of Theology, University of Durham (1997). My thesis was titled «The Patriarchal Institution in the Early Church (The Pentarchy of the Patriarchs: The Presuppositions, Evolution, and Function of the Institution)», supervised by Prof. fr. George Dragas.
Subsequently, I obtained a Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization in General Church History from the Faculty of Theology, Theological School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1998). My thesis, titled «The Issue of “Suborbicariae” in the Early Church», was supervised by Prof. Vlassios Phidas.
I was awarded a Doctoral Degree in General Church History from the same Faculty (2002). My dissertation, titled «The Ecumenical Patriarch Methodios I the Confessor (843–847) and His Work», was supervised by Prof. Vlassios Phidas, with advisory committee members Prof. Dimitrios Gonis and Prof. fr. George Metallinos.
I have been a scholar of the George Mavrokordatos Endowment (NKUA), the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY), the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, and the SYLFF (Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Foundation).
I gained teaching experience in private and public secondary education as a religious teacher (1999–2010) and I have been a faculty member at the Faculty of Theology, Theological School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, since 2010, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
I have also taught in the undergraduate program of the Open University of Cyprus, the Department of History at the Faculty of Letters, Languages, and Humanities, Université d’Angers, the Faculty of Theology in Graz, the Faculty of Theology of the Church of Cyprus, the postgraduate program of the Department of Social Theology and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Theology, NKUA, the Joint Postgraduate Program «Greece: Church History and Culture» (Department of Social Theology & Christian Culture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - Department of Social Theology & Religious Studies, NKUA), and the Postgraduate Program «Graeco-Roman and Greco-Italian Studies» (Department of Italian Language and Literature, NKUA).
I served as an "Officer" in the Hellenic Army (1997–1998), "Special Advisor" to the Secretary General of Information (2004–2007), Head of the Conference Sector of the Inter-Orthodox Center of the Church of Greece (2009–2010), and Secretary General for Media (2012–2014).
I have been a member of the Board of the "Student Theological Association" (F.T.S.), President of the Postgraduate Student Theological Association (M.F.T.S.), President of Postgraduate Students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a member of the Federation of Private School Teachers of Greece (O.I.E.L.E.) and the Secondary Education Teachers' Federation of Greece (O.L.M.E.). I am also a member of "Christian Youth Shelter of Ilion, ODOS," the "Panhellenic Union of Theologians," the "Brotherhood of Tourkoleka Residents, Nikitaras," the Association of "Friends of the Historic Monastery of St. Demetrios Tourkoleka," the Arcadians' Association of Ilion "Proselinoi," Secretary General of the Board of Directors of the Panhellenic "Friends of Mount Athos Association," Treasurer of the Association "The Three Hierarchs," a member of the "National Gymnastics Association" (1893), and President of AHEPA HJ-37 Ilion, District 25 - Hellas.
Actively engaged in politics since 1989, I have been a member and cadre of DAP and ONNED, a founding member of the "Youth of Anoixis," a member of the party of Nea Democratia, a participant in various committees and secretariats of the party, a parliamentary candidate for Arcadia with Nea Democratia (January 2015), and have held positions in government.
I have participated in numerous research and university programs, electoral bodies, administrative and academic committees, conference organizing committees, publication editorial committees, evaluations of theses and dissertations, public speeches, lectures, and conference presentations, as well as various research and educational missions to Mount Athos.
