GJIROKASTER, ALBANIA
2025
"In Gjirokaster, a new form rises—a contemporary tower house that embodies the spirit of the historic kullë, anchoring itself to the past with a sturdy stone foundation and a profound respect for the legacy of the 'City of Stone.'"
The primary concept is to build a new structure that pays homage to the distinctive Ottoman-era tower houses (kulle) of Gjirokaster. This is achieved by echoing the traditional forms -a stone base with a lighter upper structure- and the characteristic verticality of the old city's architecture. The hotel is situated within the unique urban fabric of Gjirokaster, which is defined by steep, stone-paved streets and houses built directly into the rocky hillside. The design is a respectful nod to this context, ensuring the new building feels like a natural extension of the historic ''City of Stone''.
The structure features a multi-story design built into a hillside, utilizing robust stone masonry for the lower levels and retaining walls, characteristic of vernacular building techniques.
Key architectural elements include the arched, large windows on the ground floor, which create an imposing base, and the lighter stucco facade on the upper floors. The use of wooden balconies and the distinct, multiple, smaller arched windows with light blue trim on the upper levels add a decorative, often Neoclassical or folkloric touch. The stone-paved patio and the use of natural materials integrate the building with its rugged, natural surroundings.
The architecture heavily features local stone, which is the signature building material of Gjirokaster. It is used for the lower levels and protective walls, creating a sense of solidity and grounding the building in its environment. The upper parts of the structure, however, use a lighter material, possibly a rendered or plastered concrete, to mimic the whitewashed upper floors of traditional houses. Wood is also a key material, seen in the traditional-style window frames and possibly in the interior details, adding warmth and authenticity.
