The laboratory emphasizes a balance between fundamental academic research and practical industrial applications. Its research areas include input shaping control, motion and force control, intelligent robotics, multi-axis force sensors, embedded mechatronic systems, and advanced control theory. Application areas include service robots, industrial robots, railway vehicles, and atomic force microscopes.

Professor Chul-Goo Kang, the founder and director of the laboratory, retired from Konkuk University in February 2024.

Robo Armwrestler 1: News clip by YTN News (Korean TV Channel) on Nov. 26, 2005. Armwrestling robot was developed by Prof. Chul-Goo Kang and his students at Konkuk University, Korea. The Robo Armwrestler has salient features, namely, it generates automatically the force level appropriate to each person, and therefore any person with either a strong or weak arm-force can enjoy arm wrestling without any parameter changes; its generated force profile varies with each match, so one person can enjoy arm wrestling with the robot for a long time without becoming bored; the winning average of the robot is determined randomly, but the robot measures the person's will to win during the match, and the result influences the winning average of the robot.
