Learning is a social activity that is conducted through the means of collaborative tasks, communication, and interactions with other individuals. The digital world provides many advanced 4IR tools that could be used to advance teaching and learning, one of them being social networks. Social networking as a communication tool is increasing on the daily basis. Education institutions are always looking for new ways that will enhance teaching as well as learning. Social media has changed the way in which teachers and students communicate and collaborate. This may also be known as E-learning. Schools are starting to introduce social media as part of their teaching methodologies to make teaching and learning more interesting. Social media collaboration will be able to eliminate isolated intelligence into collectives by interacting with other learners. This will provide a foundation of trust to learners who are uncomfortable with sharing their knowledge with others. The use of social media will also enhance creativity and innovation because the learners are being exposed to new technological resources. This will also lead to learners being able to explore even more on their own, developing their soft skills which will help them prepare for the workplace.
The use of social networks in schools will allow learners to communicate with each other actively and reflect collectively on challenges. This will improve relationship amongst learners and engagement as well as motivate them. Communication through social networks will also lead to learners being able to clarify ideas and share information effectively with each other.

Collaborating on social media will be an advantage for both the teachers and learners, because there are no time or space limits meaning they can have time for asking more questions and adjourn the meeting when they have complete everything. Teachers can use these social platforms to post notes and answer questions related to school work. Learners are also at an advantage because they can store their information to easily access when they need it. These online tools that allow learners to interact with each other and their teachers remotely are in need, regardless of synchronous and asynchronous modes. Synchronous communication is when individuals are able to interact with each other from different geographical locations through the means of online chat or virtual classes etc. Social media platforms also allow the use of video conferencing and screen sharing that teachers and learners can use to collaborate with each other. Screen sharing allows one to share what is displayed on their screen on to the rest of those who are part of the discussion, it would benefit teachers and learners whenever they want to discuss a question paper.
