Instax Mini

The Instax Mini Neo 90 has the most features of all the Instax mini cameras in 2018 which was the reason I bought it. I used to own the original version of the now called Fuji Instax Mini 9 which is the most basic model. All Fuji Instax cameras do a similar job to the most part so if you are not bothered about having a nicer looking camera with more features you might prefer the Mini 9 and can save some cash.

Let's get a few things out of the way first: yes, the Fujifilm Instax mini 90 is a three-year-old camera. No, it is not a digital camera. Yes, it was my favorite camera of the year. Now let's proceed.

I bought the Instax mini 90 in March, but I spent almost two years up until then talking myself out of buying one. It was hard to justify the expense to myself. I have access to many nice digital cameras, and I always have a phone on hand, why buy a little plastic film camera that costs about a dollar per exposure? I put it to the back of my mind, but a little pang of jealousy struck every time I saw someone else carrying one.

The mini 90 isn't my first instant camera. I bought a Polaroid at Best Buy during college, which must have been during the very last days that anyone could buy a Polaroid at Best Buy. It was sort of cumbersome and it definitely wasn't cool-looking, but there was something about it that got everyone excited about when I brought it out. I took plenty of snapshots of friends, but eventually ran out of film and didn't buy more. Now it sits in a drawer at my parents' house.

It was spring when I finally realized I should just buy the mini 90. After that, it was with me for pretty much every milestone event of the year. It was there when my sister visited and we went to one of the first baseball games of the season. I brought it to North Carolina where my boyfriend and I caught up with friends and met their babies. It came along to a tennis tournament with my family, when friends visited and to more baseball games than I want to admit to attending.

Had been considering "investing" in the instax "system", the black-bordered version of the film tickled me in particular. Ultimately weighed up cost, bulk/convenience and image quality and stuck to a phone camera, printing out on-the-go with an LG pocket printer (which uses Zink technology). Quality is really decent and detailed for a 2x3 print that's in your hand and viewable in one minute.

If you like the idea of a small form factor but want best-available instant snap quality, have a look at the mini dye-sublimation models - Both Kodak and Skymall make them - Bit bigger than Zink printers, prints are a bit bigger than Zink printers, skin tones are better than Zink.

Yes, I've got hundreds of images from a Nikon F and Zenza Bronica that I love.

They are better quality than the instax produces and the images are also very well made, taken mostly by my father, a career professional photographer.

Ryan, I agree with you, I don't like phones for pictures, but they are better than cameras like the instax, easier to use, always with you and create photos that can be viewed instantly and printed just like a film is developed.

It's so ironic - I have been shooting digital for years and have become increasingly OCD about color, dynamic range, and sharpness in search of perfection. Then my wife buys me a instax film camera last year - not too sharp, not very color accurate, crushed blacks etc. So this switch goes off in my head, the perfection I have been searching for isn't perfection at all, but the beauty of analog photography, a truly imperfect perfection ;)

So what's the true cost, the cost of the keepers, the ones that survive the circular file? $10 per photo or more, probably, and that's for the "keepers" whose image quality is spectacularly poor. Ok, you can afford your expensive hobby but if your article/opinion piece convinces readers to buy a mini 90, I don't foresee too many getting much use before also ending up sitting in a drawer in some parent's house. Caveat emptor.

completely agree....look and the good canon dye sublimation printers for about 90 bucks .... good hardware for next to nothing 4x6 prints for about 30 us cents each not a dollar for prints the size of business cards instax

I also have the Fuji Instax mini 90 and yes there is something intangible about the tangible. People are rightly fascinated as the image develops in front of their eyes. Not only is the little treasure at the end a joy the entire process is. Good choice my only lament is that Instax is likely a factor in the discontinuing of Fuji FP100c.

The camera costs $200, and you get a creative device where the whole is better than the sum of its parts. The digital camera features are limited in their resolution, the prints are to the smaller Instax mini format, and printing images from a smartphone is output at a lower resolution than photos taken on the camera.

Naturally, the more oversized prints from a device with higher resolution are much nicer, and there are intelligent features in the stand-alone printer, like a QR code addition to seeing notes and effects. But naturally, the printer requires a smartphone, while the mini EVO is self-contained.

Colors and contrast are typically punchy, with dark shadows and paler highlights. Definition is sharper than rival film formats, and there's no light leakage like you'd find on a lomography-style camera - unless you've forcibly added some using the effects wheel.
