CONCLUSION 

JT Realmuto is a remarkable athlete.  

Across his career he has proven to be among the top players at the position. With his age and the sheer fact he has played 1400+ games and caught over 11,500+ total innings in his career so far, there are cracks starting to appear that he is becoming a mere mortal. His ability to remain at an elite level defensively is outstanding, and as a Phillies fan I see him perform that high standard everyday. So far this season his framing metrics, pop times are returning to hold up with the league, while his speed and ability running the bases remains close to his career peaks.  

What has appeared looking more closely is that his age and the collation of innings caught, has critics wondering- how many more miles are left in his knees to continue to perform defensively at a high level? Age does appear to be affecting Realmuto's offensive output and workload management, but not to the same extent defensively.  

Other elements of the Realmuto package that don’t go unnoticed to the avid baseball person is his ability to command and manage the pitching staff. The Phillies understand the value Realmuto brings to the staff and earns their trust across a season; when the game is on the line, he is the one that pitchers want behind the dish. This intangible trait is one that organisations and pitchers value, and certainly would have been a big part of the 2026 season contract negotiations with the Phillies.  

JT is clearly struggling this season at the plate with practically all measurables at the lowest of his career. There’s no doubt he will continue to work hard every day with one of the best hitting coaches in the league in Kevin Long, and work through what is required to bring his numbers back to a positional league average position.  

Realmuto’s value this season does appear to lean towards being that leader and manager behind the plate and the Phillies seem comfortable to take that over his current offensive output. The bench selection of adding Stubbs and having him work out and play various positions, while keeping Marchan as the true back up, highlights that the Phils are hanging with JT offensively, preferencing the defense and staff management, while providing more days off to keep those lower limbs as fresh as possible down the stretch. With 2 years and $30m left on his contract, he is no longer the complete catcher who dominated from 2018–2021, yet he remains one of baseball's most valuable defensive catchers and leaders and will need to be managed to apply his value to the team.  

This look at JT Realmuto does confirm that the value of catchers can’t just be measured on what they bring to the staff or solely their defensive output. The team at the Just Baseball Pod rightly confirmed that offensive output is a large part of the overall assessment and value of a catcher.  While Realmuto is still performing at a high level, disappointingly to this Phillies fan, the guys are right- other catchers are having a greater overall impact and his rating is accurately reflected in the league…… (for now!!!!)
