ATHLETICISM
A multi-sport athlete in high school across football, wrestling as well as baseball, it’s this natural athleticism that has transcended through his MLB career where he is considered still one of the most athletic catchers in the game. His ability to dynamically move, block, recover, throw and run, has served him well and still remains a strong part of his all round game. Across his career JT’s sprint speed has always been at the top among catchers. Even after knee surgery in 2024, he was able to recapture and maintain his natural speed. During his rookie year in 2015, JT’s sprint speed was marked at 28.8 ft/s, currently in 2026 he is tracking at 28.4 which positionally ranks him #2 in the league. There does appear to be some signs that his knee surgery may be having an impact on his lateral mobility. So far this season, JT is getting across to only half as many “tough” opportunities that he was prior to knee surgery in 2024. He is still elite in “easy” opportunities ranking 3rd in baseball on the balls he should be stopping, though his blocks above average has moved from -4 in 2025, which is noticeably different from his All Star years where this was between +14-16. JT is currently in 2026 tracking at 2.
