-The risk and benefits of gaming I was reading about are, in my opinion, very much common knowledge. We know gaming can result in loneliness, sometimes depression, and overall avoidance of social interaction. I found an article on the types of persuasion through games that I think would be more beneficial for our project than to know risk and benefits of gaming. Let me know what you guys think!
There are three types of persuasion that are talked about in De la Hera Conde-Pumpido’s research (2017), those types are: exocentric persuasion, endocentric persuasion, and game-mediated persuasion.
Exocentric persuasion refers to ”the persuasive strategies used within digital games to convey a specific message to the player during the game session” (De la Hera Conde-Pumpido, 2017), so the game itself has the persuasive rhetoric. Following tha idea, three levels of persuasion are described: “(1) the signs embedded within the game; (2) the system that allows players to interact with the signs of the game; and (3) the context in which games are played” And based on that model there are seven persuasive dimensions: lnguistic persuasion, sonic persuasion, visual persuasion, haptic persuasion, procedural persuasion, narrative persuasion and cinematic persuasion (De la Hera Conde-Pumpido, 2017).
Endocentric persuasion refers to “to the strategies used within a digital game to engage and motivate a player to play a game and keep playing it” (De la Hera Conde-Pumpido, 2017). So it is not designed to convey a message but to keep players engaged. This type of persuasion focuses on motivational potential and methods to connect to the player’s personality traits and the context in which they are living. This type of persuasion include four dimensions that can be used: “tactical persuasion; sensorial persuasion; affective persuasion; and social persuasion”. Those dimensions can be reached through: (1) arousing sensory experiences, (2) arousing emotions, (3) delivering intellectual challenges and/or encouraging players to establish relationships with other people" (De la Hera Conde-Pumpido, 2017).
