Why Search Engines Aren't Enough
Search engines like Google are helpful, but they are designed to show the most popular results, not always the most accurate ones. The modern web is saturated with low-quality, AI-generated content and spam, with companies paying for their sites to be at the top, burying human-sourced answers. Much of the content you see is also derived from the things you have already interacted with, using an algorithm. For example, if you are an avid energy drink consumer and repeatedly purchase it online, you may find that the advertisements you are getting are related to energy drinks. That is why researchers often use academic databases instead of relying only on Google.
What is a Database?
A database is a collection of organized, trusted sources that can be searched quickly. They may contain scholarly journal articles, research studies, or academic books. Unlike a normal search engine, databases are designed specifically for research.
