Finding a source is not the same as understanding it. A source can sound impressive and still be misleading, incomplete, or overhyped. Interpreting research means asking better questions: What was studied? How was it studied? What were the main results? What are the limitations? And what other credible sources support or challenge the same claim?
A headline or tweet can make a study sound simpler or bigger than it really is. Good readers slow down. They remember that one study is only a clue, not a final answer. Ask: What did this study actually test? What did it find? Even if the result looks clear, there might be other explanations (like other factors or chance). When many studies agree, we can be more confident. But one study by itself isn’t proof of anything.
Start with the title and abstract. Ask: What is the study trying to find out?
Then find the study type. Is this one study, a review, a meta-analysis, or just a news summary?
Next, check the methods. Who was studied? How many people were included? What changed?
Then read the results. What happened? What did not happen?
After that, read the limitations. What could weaken the conclusion?
Finally, cross-check the claim. Can you find another credible source that supports it, narrows it, or challenges it?
