Bias is a strong, unfair preference for or against something. It can be present anywhere — in a person, group, idea, or thing — often without realizing it. Our brains evolved to make quick decisions, and bias is a side effect of that speed, shaped by our upbringing, culture, and repeated exposure to certain ideas. In research, bias can be especially consequential: a scientist who believes a new drug works might unconsciously record ambiguous findings in its favor, or a study might only recruit participants from one demographic and then apply its conclusions to everyone. Those flawed studies then become sources that others cite and build upon, spreading the bias further. Everyone has biases; the key is learning to notice them so they don't quietly steer our decisions.
Not every source is equally trustworthy, and even reliable sources can have a point of view. Learning to spot bias doesn't mean dismissing sources; it means reading them more critically.
Bias can emerge in sources for a variety of different reasons, both intentional and unintentional. It thus makes it important to know when and how a source is biased. Here are some techniques that you can apply to check if a source is biased:
Check who made it and why: Look at the author, publisher, or funder, and ask whether they have a stake in the conclusion — a company, campaign, or group describing its own interests has reason to slant things.
Watch the language: Emotional, loaded, or one-sided wording is a signal that the source is trying to persuade rather than inform.
Look for missing perspectives: Notice whose voices or counterarguments are left out. A fair source acknowledges opposing views; a biased one ignores or dismisses them.
Question the evidence: See whether claims are backed by sources, whether data is cherry-picked, and whether inconvenient findings are downplayed or omitted.
Check the sample or scope: Ask who was actually studied or surveyed — results drawn from a narrow or self-selected group tend to skew in one direction.
Compare against other sources: Cross-check the claim elsewhere, especially with sources you'd expect to disagree. If only one type of source makes the claim, be cautious.
Notice your own reaction: If something feels reassuring because it confirms what you already believed, slow down — that's exactly when confirmation bias slips past.
If you've spotted a slant, weigh it instead of just discarding the source:
Direction — which way does the bias push? Naming the direction tells you whether the real picture is probably more or less than what's claimed.
Severity — is the slant in the framing only, or does it reach into the actual evidence? A passionate tone is survivable; cherry-picked or fabricated data is not.
Usability — a biased source can still be useful if you read it for facts rather than conclusions, or pair it with an opposing one to triangulate the truth.
Trust signals — sources that cite a broad body of evidence, acknowledge uncertainty, and distinguish who a finding applies to are generally more reliable than those offering a single confident answer.

Source A is biased by commercial interest. It's written by a company that sells the product, uses vague "studies show" with no citations, leans on customer testimonials, and ends in a sales pitch. The slanting is toward "yes, buy it" — and likely unintentional in tone, but the stake is obvious.
Source B is biased by sensationalism and cherry-picking. Loaded language ("scam," "shocking," "wake up"), a single scary study presented as the whole story, and a conspiratorial "they don't want you to know" framing. It's slanted the opposite direction from A, which is the useful lesson: bias isn't about which side — it's about the one-sided method.
Source C is the sound one. It cites the broad body of evidence rather than one study, acknowledges the research is mixed, distinguishes who benefits from who doesn't, and has nothing to sell. Admitting uncertainty is a hallmark of a trustworthy source.
