The Idnentiy of Native People can be seen in thier clothing choice, shaped by social, political , historical, and geographical factors. Different Tribes are represented differently depending what they wear, thus it is vital that as members of modern American society we respect Indigenous people's clothing. It is not a costume, dressing up as a Native is never appropriate, as it is often not accurate and disrepectful. Learning about Indigenous People's clothing will help many understand why it is important to refrain from "dressing up" as a Native American. Indigenous people wear cultual clothing for special or ceremonial occasions. Indigenous Fashion is more than tradition, clothing can reprsent belonging , show resistance, and used to showcase their spiritual beliefs. Below are different tribes and what they wear to represent themselves.
Arctic Canada, northern and southwestern Alaska in the United States.
The southeastern United States in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, the Cherokee Nation was forced to relocate to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma.)
Southern Mexico in the Mesoamerican region of North America.
