Our Origin Story

We are a group of educators from three English adult education centers in the Montreal area. Located on traditional Kanien'keha:ka territory, we all had a drive to see courses reflect the history of this land made available to our students. Together, we worked to develop what we believe are courses the support this endeavor, and we want to support others to bring them to life in their schools.

Curran Katsi'sorokwas Jacobs

Curran is a Kanienke’ha:ka woman who currently navigates the world as teacher some days and as a consultant on others. She is the Indigenous Resource Teacher for Adult Education at the Nova Career Centre in Chateauguay. She also doubles as the Indigenous advisor for the New Frontiers School Board. Curran has worked with Kanienke’haka youth for most of her life, including her role as classroom teacher at Karonhianonhnha School in Kahnawake for the past 2 years. She also has experience in Eeyou Itschee as she completed one of her teaching internships at the CSB in Mistissini. All of this work and the future work is to help foster better education for Indigenous youth, while modelling the reality of walking in two worlds simultaneously.

Kelly Ryan

Kelly Ryan is a pedagogical consultant for adult and vocational education at the New Frontiers School Board on the South shore of Montreal, Quebec. Working together with this dynamic team has deepened Kelly’s understanding of the need to educate ourselves about the different historical narratives that shape our beliefs about our country’s origin. She is eager to continue this journey of awareness and take steps towards reconciliation by participating in the development and sharing of these Indigenous history courses.

Janice Newton

Janice grew up in Saskatchewan. She began her career as an educator after training there as a Life Skills Coach. Since moving to Quebec in 1987, she has facilitated, and continues to offer, a diverse range of option courses with Lester B. Pearson School Board, including an Indigenous Studies class called Origins. Her studies at Concordia were in the humanities, thus her focus is on personal and social development programs. She has a diploma in homeopathy, the most recent learning in her second career in natural medicine. Janice believes in learning from others, providing opportunities for all people, and holds dearly the core value of building community.

Gail Gagnon

Gail is currently working as a pedagogical consultant at Place Cartier Adult Centre, part of the Lester B. Pearson School Board. She is honoured to be part of a team designing courses in Indigenous Studies that will help to "re-right" the wrongs that have been inflicted on Indigenous peoples in this country.

Emilie Bowles

Emilie Bowles (she/her) is a white settler based out of Montreal. She attended Bishop's University, where she met Curran, and has been working in adult education since 2014. After spending time in Indigenous communities during an experiential field course in the Northwest Territories and a 3-month practicum in Kawawachikamach, Emilie became a Resource Teacher for Indigenous Students at Nova Career Centre. Though she is now working as a RECIT consultant, she remains committed to the causes of decolonization and reconciliation in education.
