This learning programme is intended for all persons who need to:
Use Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based spreadsheet application to create and edit spreadsheets.
This Unit Standard is intended for people who need to create and edit spreadsheets using a Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based spreadsheet application either as a user of computers or as basic knowledge for a career needing this competency, like the ICT industry.
Change the appearance of a spreadsheet.
This Unit Standard is intended for people who need to have to present sophisticated spreadsheets in a variety of industry and economic sectors.
Programme entry level requirements
It is assumed that people learning towards this Unit Standard are already competent in:
Communication at NQF Level 3
Computer Literacy at NQF Level 2
Operate a personal computer system (ID 116932 - NQF Level 1)
Use generic functions in a Graphical User Interface (GUI)-environment (ID 117902 - NQF Level 1)
UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This standard is applicable to any spreadsheet application that runs on any Graphical User Interface(GUI) operating system.
Where spreadsheets are referenced, it refers to a whole spreadsheet, a single page of a spreadsheet, or selected text in a spreadsheet.
Where wording are not exact for the chosen operating system, the learner can choose the equivalent item or option to demonstrate competence in the specific outcome or assessment criteria.
Programme Outcomes
This learning programme is outcomes-based which means we take the responsibility of learning away from the Skills Development Provider and place it in your hands.
In this unit, we will be covering the following learning outcomes:
• Use Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based spreadsheet application to create and edit spreadsheets
• Change the appearance of a spreadsheet
During the workshop, the learner will complete several class activities that will form part of their formative assessment. In this, the learner can practise and explore new skills in a safe environment.
The learner should take the opportunity to gather as much information as they can use during their workplace learning and self-study.
The workshop will be followed by summative assessment tasks to be completed in your workplace. In some cases, the learner may be required to do research and complete the tasks in their own time.
Create and Edit Spreadsheets

Define spreadsheet in terms of its purpose and use
Name examples of spreadsheet programs
Provide examples of spreadsheets that can be produced using a spreadsheet application
Explain the benefits of using a spreadsheet application for producing and working with spreadsheets
Identify and describe the properties of a spreadsheet
Identify and describe the properties of a spreadsheet in terms of its purpose and use
Work within organisational standards and procedures with MS Excel
Create a spreadsheet
Edit a spreadsheet
Format a spreadsheet
Apply security
Check and print the spreadsheet
Change the Appearance of a Spreadsheet
Duration: 1 & 1/2 Days
(Days 2 & 3)
Hide and unhide columns from view in order to protect source information
Hide and unhide rows from view to meet user requirements
Split the spreadsheet horizontally or vertically in order to access different parts of the document at the same time
Apply conditional formatting to data
Outline data in a spreadsheet
Work with comments
Create a template for maintaining standard input documents using available features
Save a new template as a spreadsheet with a specific name in a specific folder
Retrieve a created template to produce a spreadsheet which was saved
Edit a created template according to user requirements
Debrief and conclude the programme by referring to each person’s objective for the course and ask whether they have achieved their objective
