This class is designed for learners who need to strengthen their encoding (spelling) skills and begin applying them to writing. Using a structured literacy approach, we’ll cover vowel teams, consonant-le syllables, suffix rules, and more.
Grammar instruction will follow the Fix It! Grammar Level 1 curriculum from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students will be introduced to parts of speech, punctuation, clauses, and other foundational grammar skills in an accessible and engaging way.
Writing instruction will integrate spelling and grammar concepts as students begin to construct descriptive and narrative paragraphs. Using Four Square graphic organizers, learners will develop topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions. We'll also explore how to expand sentences with vivid, varied language. Opportunities for creative writing and journaling will be included to encourage self-expression.
Assignments outside of class will reinforce learning and provide additional practice. Instruction is paced and adapted to meet the individual needs of each learner.

Learners will engage in activities that encourage a growth mindset to build self confidence and resilience when faced with challenges. A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and abilities are not fixed, but can be developed and improved through effort, learning, and perseverance. It's about seeing challenges and setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than viewing them as limitations. The first half of class will be lessons/discussions using prompts (some from the Big Life journal/curriculum) and the second half of class learners will take part in fun activities &/or games that allow us to practice what we have learned.
