Description

Can we ensure that researchers and the public make informed decisions when using governmental data?  Can data from different sources and agencies be used to build a more complete picture? James Church (University of California, Berkeley) will guide us into the world of international data. Bill Sermons (National Director of Research and Evaluation for Catholic Charities USA; Carnegie Mellon University) will discuss how a nonprofit makes use and sense of the data. Jill Blaemers will explain the challenges  Sage DataPlanet faces in evaluating and making governmental data usable.

James Church

Librarian for Economics, Political Economy, Global Studies, and International Government Information

University of California Berkeley Library 

Jim Church is the librarian for economics, political economy, global studies, and international government information at UC Berkeley. He has served as the chair of the IFLA Government Information and Official Publications Section and held multiple positions in the Government Documents Roundtable of the American Library Association. He has authored many publications on international government information and enjoys teaching and speaking about international government data at conferences. In June 2022 he will be a co-recipient of the GODORT Bernadine Abbott Hoduski Founders Award and Margaret T. Lane / Virginia F. Saunders Memorial Research Award. 

Bill Sermons

Adjunct Professor, Carnegie Mellon University

Vice President for Research & Evaluation, Volunteers of America, Inc

M William Sermons, PhD is the Vice President for Research & Evaluation for Volunteers of America and Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College. Dr. Sermons, who earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University and Masters of Social Work from Catholic University, has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, working in both national advocacy organizations focused on policy, such as the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Center for Responsible Lending, and in National human service organizations, like his current work with Volunteers of America and former role with Catholic Charities USA. He teaches the course Using R for Policy Data Analysis, which focuses on the use of public data and open source tools to document racial disparities in public policy. 

Jill Blaemers

Executive Editor, Data Planet, Sage Publishing 

Jill currently serves as the editorial lead for Data Planet, bringing extensive information industry experience and a background in library science to her role. She primarily evaluates and selects datasets for ingestion into Data Planet and also works on dataset documentation and validation. To this end, she works closely with a team of data engineers to structure datasets sourced from public and private organizations worldwide, serving them up on a single platform, all with the aim of facilitating discovery and use of the data. Jill has been with Data Planet since 2011, working with founder and then CEO Richard Landry until his retirement in 2020.
