Fun Fact: Allison is a diehard musical theater fan who first encountered the character of Fagin through the Broadway show Oliver!. She could probably do a one-woman production of that show on demand (though she won't).
Fun fact: I had terrible writer's block before I began this book, and the only thing that worked was something I learned from reading an interview with cartoonist and writer Lynda Barry -- I got a yellow legal pad, a tiny paintbrush, and blobs of blue and red acrylic paint and WROTE this way, painstakingly slowly, for months - filling 6 legal pads with "paint writing. "The first germ of an idea for this book came from the "paint writing" I did!
Fun Fact: THE EX-GIRLFRIEND MURDER CLUB is Gloria Chao's debut adult mystery after five young adult contemporary novels, and it's also her first series, with the sequel, THE MORTAL ENEMY MURDER CLUB releasing July 28, 2026. The idea came about while brainstorming a romance where three women dating the same man band together to get revenge, and Gloria was trying to raise the stakes when the question, "What if he dies?" popped into her head. And immediately she realized the three women would become the top suspects with motive and a crime scene covered in their DNA, and thus was her entry into the mystery genre.
Another fun fact is that Gloria knew from the beginning that she wanted the friendship between the three scorned women to be the heart of THE EX-GIRLFRIEND MURDER CLUB. This was partially inspired by a news article she saw about two women who found out they were dating the same man, dumped him, and then went on vacation together. Gloria wanted to capture ride-or-die friendships and the idea that even the worst storms can lead to a rainbow.
