Fun fact: Mae is inspired by the many awesome female geeks I know. At the time I started writing Mae female geeks always seemed to be tech support for the real hero, or an ugly duckling eager to stop being a geek. Mae is a hero because she’s a geek.
Fun Fact: Creating nonfiction often involves surprise and serendipity. One research discovery leads to another. An unexpected gem from a previous nonfiction project about 19th century Wisconsin helped inspire MANY VOICES, BUILDING ERIE, THE CANAL THAT CHANGED AMERICA. I noticed so many fascinating journey stories of immigrants who settled in Great Lakes cities and on Midwest farms. They followed a three-part waterway I'd never considered before: crossing the Atlantic Ocean, then following the Erie Canal to Buffalo, NY and boarding a Great Lakes steamer for the arduous journey. This helped pique my curiosity about the Erie Canal.
