My research employs a qualitative approach, focusing on the political economy of consumer society, food and agriculture, and infrastructure in daily life. In these studies, I combine social practice theory and Callon's market agencement to advance Polanyi's theory of "the economy as instituted processes" and explore how the economy embedded in society alters the environment. Through research, I hope to engage in dialogue between East Asian studies and Western theories.
My doctoral dissertation studied the politics of consumer societies, comparing the rise of consumer society in Taiwan, China, and Japan after World War II, and the roles played by government, media, and civil society. During my time at Feng Chia University, I researched the development of alternative food networks in East Asia, analyzing how consumer communities restructure daily practices, the agency of alternative markets, the transnational dissemination of moral discourse, and the infrastructure of food citizenship.
After moving to Tunghai University, I attempted to study sustainable consumption from a new perspective. In my research on "Assembling a New Home," I analyzed urban planning, real estate projects and interior design, as well as homeowners' home-making practices, discussing how material and narratives at various levels construct a good life. My latest research project, "Water Infrastructure," discusses inequalities in water consumption, the interaction between infrastructure and drought, and the urban and rural politics of water.
I am actively involved in the international academic community. In 2026, I was elected to the editorial board of *Sociology*, the flagship journal of the British Sociological Association. Since 2021, I have served on the editorial board of *Consumption & Society*, the journal of the European Sociological Association's Consumption network, and served as a guest editor for a special section on "Food and East Asian Transformation" in 2025-2026. In addition, I am a scientific committee member of the *Italian Sociological Review* and a reviewer for over a dozen international journals. Domestically, I am currently on the editorial board of *Taiwanese Sociology*, and previously served on the editorial board of the *Feng Chia Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences*.
