I prefer to focus on and make historically styled kilts of the 1790-1890 period. They can be worn for historical or modern applications. I will make them to your preferences, and if you have a particular time period of interest, need, etc., I would be happy to discuss the options. Kilts can be made with Box, Knife, or "Kingussie" pleating (if you have specific time period interests, feel free to discuss which would be most correct for you). Pleats on low yardage kilts (4-5 yard) are all hand-sewn on both the outside and inside as was historically done. Larger yardage kilts are made with cut aways, stabilizer, and canvassing in the traditional style. Lining is not necessary on the older, short-yardage kilts but can be added if wanted.
Due to the cost of tartan and tweed fabrics and the variety of costs between mills, I am pricing out my kilts by individual options, above and beyond the cost of the fabric. To see what I can provide for tartan click here.
Base labor costs: 4-5 yard kilt - $175, 6+ yard "modern" kilt- ($225)
Fastening - Twill ties - $0, Button with or without tie - $10, strap and buckles - $25
Braces buttons - $10
Liner (choice of linen or cotton) - $20
Linen or Poly thread (linen is a great historic choice, poly is much stronger and more durable)
Pleat choices: Box, Knife, or Kingussie pleat. I pleat in the more historical style to the stripe (and can to "nothing" as is seen in very old kilts). I choose not to pleat to the sett, but can recommend kilt makers that will.
