Community issue: suburban development
Focus Issue: Our issue is habitat destruction due to suburban development.
Why we chose this issue: We choose this issue because we have had personal experience with animals being displaced in our neighborhoods.
Root Cause: The Waco population is rapidly growing and new neighborhoods are being created where animals are living. This results in habitat destruction and displaced animals.
How we know this is a problem:
The Waco population is growing at a rate of 0.94% annually
Over two million acres of land per year are lost due to development
Wildlife and habitats are being threatened due to the break-up of land
As the prices of homes are increasing, more people are moving to suburban neighborhoods to find cheaper housing
100 acres of land filled with trees near Lake Waco is being demolished to make room for thirty plots of land for homes
People move to suburban areas because the housing is cheaper
Suburban development is increasing the rates of biodiversity loss
