The IEI was registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 in the year 1920 & was formally inaugurated in 1921 by Lord Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India. The Institution obtained the Royal Charter from King George V, in 1935, “to promote and advance the science, practice and business of engineering in all its branches in India.” Starting with this humble beginning the Institution of Engineers (India) is now an unique professional body encompassing 15 engineering disciplines and with an Overall Membership of over 0.4 million. IEI is the first professional body to represent India in several international bodies, such as World Mining Congress (WMC), World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO), Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), Federation Internationale du Beton (fib), Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). It has also bilateral agreements with a number of professional societies across the Globe.
The Alwar Local Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) came into being with its inauguration on Nov 2009. The first chairman of this centre was Sh. R.L. Agarwal, former principal of Govt. Polytechnic College, Alwar , Rajasthan. The current Chairman of this centre is Er. Subash Joshi and Er. Rajdeep Sharma are as its Honorary Secretary. The centre is very actively involved in organizing various technical activities in promoting the interest of the engineering profession.
