Talk Title

From Physical Interaction to Social Interaction: Turning Collaborative Robots Into Social Agents

ABSTRACT of the TALK

The increasing interest in collaborative robotics has led to a deeper study of interaction. The development of robots that can cohabit with humans outside preorganized working environments, depends on the types of interactions we consider and allow. In social contexts there exist many interaction types depending on the modes of communication that are used (e.g., physical, verbal, gestural) and on the interpretation level we include (based, e.g., on semantics, pragmatics, culture). In the talk we present a general perspective and some guidelines to analyze and classify key concepts and open problems in the development of social robots.

Keywords: interaction, robotics, socio-technical system, ontology, social rule, social scenario

BIO

Stefano Borgo is head of the Laboratory for Applied Ontology (LOA) at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) of CNR. He studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Padova, Indiana University and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. His research focuses on applied ontology and information modeling methodologies with applications in robotics, engineering, cyber-physical and socio-technical systems. Areas of application include engineering design, product and process modeling, laboratory data, urban planning and architecture. He co-designed the DOLCE ontology and contributed to develop several top-level ontologies. He is member of the Editorial Board of Applied Ontology and the Semantic Web Journal, of the Advisory Board of the International Association on Ontology and its Applications (IAOA) and co-chair of the Industry and Standards Technical Committee of IAOA.
