Looking for a simple yet powerful way to support student comprehension? This session will introduce the use of color coding as an effective multisensory strategy to help students better understand and engage with both fiction and non-fiction texts. Participants will explore the purpose and benefits of using color coding to highlight and organize key text elements, including main ideas, supporting details, and literary components. Through guided practice and collaborative discussion, attendees will apply color coding techniques and use the technique to write summaries of what was read. Walk away with practical strategies and ready-to-use resources that make reading more accessible and meaningful for all learners.
Leah DeYoung has worked in ELA and Special Education classroom settings for the past 25 years. She currently serves as a Certified Academic Language Therapist at Eagle Heights Elementary and as a virtual advocate and therapist for Nashville Dyslexia Center. Outside of the therapy setting, she also works to promote research and evidence-based literacy practices as an Ambassador for Missouri’s Reading League and as a board member of the Kansas/Missouri chapter of IDA.
Lesa Quinn, a Certified Academic Language Therapist, currently serves as the Reading Interventionist at Maple Elementary School. In addition to Reading, she holds certifications in Elementary Education and Special Education. Beyond her passion for providing therapeutic instruction to students with dyslexia/dyslexia characteristics, Lesa strives to educate teachers on how to best support these students in the classroom setting.
