The Science of Reading refers to what science has determined to be relevant to reading, reading acquisition, and all things related to reading. This includes translating reading science into practical application. It is critically important that science-based curricula be used to teach children to read. Non-science-based strategies have led to the reading crisis, in which 40% of the 52.2 million public school 4th graders are essentially non-readers.
This session will provide an overview of the Science of Reading, including the neurological and genetic underpinnings of reading failure, myths, successes, the English Writing System and its contribution to reading failure, and how utilizing scientific findings will help eliminate the reading crisis.

The Center for Reading and CARRD, Inc. use his identification and remediation strategies to provide high-quality and accurate assessments and successful interventions for children and adults who have dyslexia and reading difficulties.
The Center for Reading evaluation includes measures of reading, spelling, phonological processing, attention, social and emotional behavior, hearing, and a clinical interview. Center for Reading interventionists use evaluation results, Structured Literacy strategies, and curricula to implement targeted interventions based on the Science of Reading.
