We currently support approximately 5000+ pupils / students in our multi-academy trust. They range from age 3 to 18. We operate across 15 sites in Leicestershire.
-Problems we have can be around the access to the appropriate provision due to the lack of special schools, mainstream schools are having to do more to manage the multi disciplinary issues of many youngsters without the budget or appropriate staff.
-Getting the appropriate statement (educational health care plan) for those youngsters remains an issue. These can often be rejected, or are very slow to be implemented. During the period of application, schools must cope, often without the appropriate staff / skills / provision etc. If unsuccessful, schools must cope.
-Consistency of approach and effective communication between multi disciplinary groups can be a factor which leads to poor cooperation from families those in need / poor support and outcomes (e.g. social care and school).
-Mental health support in schools remains a real challenge for all.
11/10/2018. Jesús María Izquierdo. Headmaster
At Salesianos Rota, in the vocational trainning stage, we find students with dificulties in their familys and lack off motivation. One of our main challenges is to try to take the best out of them, motivate them to come to school and show them how important it is for them to finish this educative stage in order to fulfill our main goal: Preparing them for the working market.
One of indicators that measures this challenges is that every year we have more students in this educative stage (they quit very easily) and more students that finish successfully.
Another of our challenges is teacher´s continous trainning in order to offer our students nowadays methodologies. This way we are up to date and we can get the best of our students.
8.10.2018 Merenkurkku school/ Vice principal Sanna Järvinen
At Merenkurkku school we have 370 pupils between the age of 13 to 16. Our concerns are following: some of our students meet many serious problems in their lives and this causes frustration among teachers: we see every day that something is wrong but we don´t know how to help. Problems can be of many kind., mental problems, learning problems, use of alcohol or drugs, family circumstances are not good and so on. Or the the teachers find out that there are welfare services and workes in a students life but teachers feel that they don' t get enough information about what's going on and who is helping and how.
We try to solve problems in many ways, every week we stay in contact with the students parents and if needed organize meetings where all the adults of the childs life get together and try to find out what are the best ways to help.
It is really difficult to measure what is helping, if anything. One thing is to count the numbers of drop out students. Our goal is that not one of our students would drop out.
11.10.2018 Länsimetsä school/ Assistant principal Marjo Polsa
At Länsimetsä school we have 351 pupils between age 7 up to 13.
Challenges that we have:
1) Respect for the adult has changed in recent years. Likewise, parental behavior for teachers.
2) Personal problems: the emonational challenges, the concertration of students, social skills, aggressive behavior.
3) How could these things be prevented?
Things we have already done:
And as Sanna wrote it's really difficult to measure what's helping the best.
We are concerned about pupils at Vaisaari school where pupils are from 13 to16 years. There are about 700 pupils at Vaisaari school. We are also worried about some students at Raision Ammattiopisto which is a trade school after secondary school. There are students who do not manage with their studies and they drop out easily.
Need of child welfare services and institutionalization of children have increased a lot during the last few years. Specially teenagers meet problems in their life. Costs of these services have come up quickly.
Many teenagers and young adults miss professional education, work and plan for having those. They do not continue their education after primary school or they drop out after that. This kind of development proceeds social exclusion and is very harmful for the future of those persons and for the society.
Teenagers at primary school and at trade school use products with nicotine, alcohol and drugs much. Some of these very young people use these products regularly.
Many pupils, specially teenagers, at primary school and at trade school do not eat breakfast in the morning at home and school lunch during the school day. They do not eat enough vegetables and they do not exercise or move enough. This causes obesity, unfit and further health problems.
At Vaisaari school we have tried to solve the problem by putting nurse, school social worker, child welfare social worker, school psychology and psychiatric nurse to the school since a couple of years. It has not yet helped yet. Maybe there are some difficulties to co-operate between teachers and other professionals or we do not know the way we should help the pupils and there families. We have to find out how to work all professionals together with pupils and families.
At Raision Ammattiopisto we have less multiprofessional workers than at Vaisaari. We have problems also there to keep students keen on their studies. Students are mostly from 16 to 19. We have youth workers who are supposed to get the names of those young people, who interrupt or drop out from trade school, army or who are unemployed without any realistic plan for their studies and working. Unfortunately youth workers do not always get the names of those dropouts or the young people do not want to get any help.
I agree with Arja’s opinions about the problems in Raisio.
In Vaisaari school we have quite many employees working with pupils challenges/problems. Still we haven’t managed to solve problems we have. I think one of the key task is how we lead employees, how we organize the work. It’s very usual in Vaisaari, that I hear different people working with same pupils problems, quite same way, without knowing each others work. We would be much more effective by better coordination. Another key task is what are those effective means single employee should use to get to our goal.
