A rather worn-out joke goes that Raisio is Finland’s only crossroads which has town status. In Raisio, his joke is still making people laugh, since at the junction point of many roads there is always people, trade, and a taste of the new.
Raisio has over 24000 residents and over 1300 businesses, all within the confines of a compact and cosy home town. Many are attracted by the good services and broad recreational opportunities, as well as the safe atmosphere of this small town. Also, by straying a little from the main roads into the residential areas, you can see Raisio’s quite surprisingly green and verdant environment. Nature abounds in the back gardens of many, and fine green spaces can be found all around the town. Raisio also stretches as far as the sea; the town’s large marina is an outstanding gateway into the world’s most beautiful archipelago.
Raisio is just the right size for a home town: big enough to offer comprehensive, good quality services while still small enough to offer a pleasant and safe atmosphere. Its smallness also offers another advantage: everything is located nearby and so is easy to reach by car, bike, or on foot.
There are kindergartens and primary schools all around the town. In total there are nine primary schools. When moving up to secondary school, all children are gathered into the same school in Vaisaari, near the town center. There are nine child day care centers in total, but early education is also offered in group family day care centers, family day carers’ homes and private day care centers. Day-care services also offer park and after-school club activities, and service vouchers are also in use.
In Raisio, free-time activities are in easy reach, as outdoor routes and nature areas can be found right next to almost every home, Whether you are looking for exercise, culture, or some other hobby, the options are numerous. In addition to the recreational services offered by the town, there are on huge number on active organizations.

Eastfield Primary School has 323 students in an urban area. We are part of the group of 11 academies in Bradgate Education Partnership (http://www.bepschools.org/). This is a Trust of 12+ schools now with over 3000 students (primary and secondary). There about 400 colleagues across the Trust. Eastfield itself has 13 teachers and 17 support staff. We are a National Support School and assist local school with teacher training and development.
We were the first school in England to introduce annual teacher appraisal and also the first school to win ' The year of Food and Farming Award'. So we have a rigorous staff management approach but also a very innovative curriculum. This year we won an award for the best outdoor curriculum.
We have many Special Needs children and some very challenging families and yet we get very good academic performance. The school and the Trust is expanding quickly. As a headteacher, Bill has 25 years experience but has also worked in a lot of schools for improvement, as an adviser or consultant, for 20 years.
We are in the project because we have a lot to learn from each partner and must be outward looking.

Mr. Antonio Manday, head teacher direccioncolegio.rota@salesianos.edu
Salesianos Rota School has 375 students aged 3 to 18 years old. It is in the city centre in Rota (Cádiz), Spain. We are part of a religious congregation, the Salesians, with more than 70 schools all around Andalucía, and more than 150 in Spain. Our congregation is spread all around the world. Salesianos Rota has 26 teachers and 4 support staff. We are a so called “Charter School”, that is to say, it is a private School that depends on the Public Administration (Junta de Andalucía), thanks to an agreement that we have with them. Salesianos have to resign the agreement every 4 years. So we depend on them administratively, though we have our own structure and self-government.
Mrs. Johanna Olsson, regional headmaster johanna.olsson@edu.vaasa.fi
Vaasa is a versatile industrial city on the west coast of Finland that offers good possibilities of development especially for the international energy industry. The population of Vaasa is nearly 68 000 inhabitants, 70% of whom speak Finnish and 23% Swedish and 7% other languages as their mother tongue.
The city of Vaasa comprises 14 Finnish and 5 Swedish speaking schools that offer primary education in grades 1-9, ages 7-16. There is also Swedish speaking state school Vasa Övningsskola and two private schools: Vaasa Christian School and Vaasa Rudolf Steiner School. The educational flagship is the University of Vaasa with its four faculties and 4500 students.
Vaasa has engaged in developing basic education with regular activities and objectives. The quality of teaching is evaluated regularly and every school in the city is audited. The management of education and headmasters are responsible for the developing work.
The basic education has set the objectives to improve children’s well-being, improve students’ learning outcomes and to also improve the teachers’ and headmasters' professional knowledge and quality of teaching.
Networking within Europe and creating functional cooperation with European countries are also objectives for the city of Vaasa.
