Arts & Place Based Pedagogies for Preservice Teachers - Study Abroad May 2024
The theme of this study abroad program is unique: the blend of both arts- and place-based pedagogies. We believe preservice teachers (PSTs) will benefit from a scaffolded, immersive experience that will support them as global citizens and critically reflective practitioners. We will accomplish this by engaging secondary (7th-12th grade) PSTs in a ten-day, structured, arts- and place-based experience in London, U.K. & Paris, France. This will include several museum visits, a musical or play in the West End, as well as guided tours of significant historical and natural. PSTs will ultimately create activities and lesson plans inspired by these experiences that they can implement in their field placements or student teaching. We want our PSTs to be ready for student teaching with all the possible tools at their fingertips to enter the profession with confidence.

Active Research Projects
PSTs Study Local
We have just started a year-long research project on arts- and place-based pedagogies in the secondary education classroom called "PSTs Study Local" because we have received funding to support at least three experiences for up to 10 secondary education students. These three experiences are meant to provide future secondary teachers with immersive encounters with the arts, from theater to sculpture and everything in between.

FIMS: The Four I Multimodal Strategy
FIMS, or the Four I Multimodal Strategy, is a set of interpretive strategies that emerged from the research conducted to prepare our book, Reimagining Literacy in the Digital Age (2022). The "four i's" represent an acronym for these interpretive strategies that all begin with the letter "i".
