Scope of the Conference:
Nowadays the globalization in design engineering and science field has been rapidly progressing under the background of the evolution of the computer and information technology. The systematization and reorganization of the academic field are advanced in many nations in the world. The Japan Society for Design Engineering (JSDE) was established as the Japan Society for Mechanical Design and Drafting in 1966 and has continued to contribute to the development of the design engineering especially in mechanical engineering field through the annual conferences and publishing the journals. Many researchers, engineers and educators in the world met at ICDES2005 in Vienna, Austria, ICDES2010 in Tokyo, Japan, ICDES2014 in Pilsen, Czech Republic and ICDES2017 in Aachen, Germany, ICDES2020 in Kokura, Japan, and discussed on many issues on design engineering and science. Then the sixth conference will be held in Alexandria, Egypt in 2025. The conference will also promote strong interactions between academic and industry in all the aspects of design engineering and science, including human resource development and education.
Message from Conference Chairman:
Welcome to the Sixth International Conference on Design Engineering and Science (ICDES 2025) from August 19 to 22 in 2025. On behalf of the Japan Society for Design Engineering, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all participants for their contribution to this important conference.
ICDES was held firstly in 2005 in Vienna Austria, secondly in 2010 in Tokyo Japan, thirdly in 2015 in Pilsen, Czech Republic, fourthly in 2017 in in Aachen, Germany. The fifth conference was scheduled to be held in Kitakyushu, Japan in 2020, however unfortunately it was held online due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, more than 70 papers have been presented from around the world in each of the five conferences so far. Because this conference will be held as a first face-to-face meeting in 9 years, then all of us will be delighted to have even more participants.
Through the experience of COVD-19, our world has transformed into the advanced information society using online tools and generative AI. In our design engineering and science field, there will be a strong need to establish new design methods that utilize generative AI while maintaining humans’ creativity. Of course, it will become increasingly important to design and develop not only software using generative AI but also hardware that physically interacts with people. I look forward to fruitful information exchanges and active discussion on these and other topics in this ICDES2025.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the devoted effort of many individuals, especially Prof. Koki Kikuchi, Prof. Tomoyuki Miyashita, Prof. Amr Eltawil and Prof. Ahmed El-Bab, keynote speakers, members of the organizing and program committees, JSDE staffs, volunteers and assisting students. An additional support from Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is also highly appreciated.

Message from Executive Committee:
We, Japan Society for Design Engineering (JSDE), held its first International Conference on Design Engineering and Science (ICDES) in Vienna, Austria in the fall of 2005 and will soon host its sixth conference in 2025. At the first conference, there were 82 oral presentations including two special speeches and five keynote speeches from nine countries, four of which were selected for the Best Paper Award sponsored by TOYOTA motor corp., CANON Systems Solutions, and Artner Co. Ltd. The award ceremony was held during the Cocktail Party at the historical City Hall of Vienna. Five years later, the second ICDES2010 at Tokyo featured 71 oral presentations including one special speech by Prof. HATAMURA, “The Practice of Creative Design” and seven keynote speeches from nine countries and selected four paper awards. The third ICDES 2014 was held in Pilsen, Czech Republic with the full cooperation of Prof. Stanislav Hosnedl, University of West Bohemia, the council of Pilsen Region, the City of Pilsen and Pilsen Region, SKODA Transportation, SCHWARZMUELLER CZ, etc. and had 84 oral presentations including two special invited speeches from more than 12 countries. The additional student workshop was also organized. From this conference onwards, the Best Paper Award and the Outstanding Paper Award for Students began to be recommended to Modern Machinery Science Journal (MMSJ) indexed in Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Ebsco. The fourth ICDES 2017 was Aachen, Germany and many participants came from many countries and regions. We enjoyed beautiful city and beer. The previous ICDES was the fifth and was scheduled to be held in Kitakyushu, Japan in 2020, but due to COVID-19 it was online. Despite the circumstances, the conference ended successfully. We would like to thank the participants and supporters. Additionally, we would like to express sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the conference so far. The late Mr. Eiji MUTOH, an honorable member of JSDE and a former executive director of Mutoh Industries, provided us with great support. The late Prof. Jun TOMIOKA made many contributions as a chairperson of ICDES2020 and a president of JSDE and was looking forward to the student’s presentations.
The sixth ICDES will be held on 19-22 August, 2025 in Alexandria, Egypt. Two special invited speeches and many oral presentations will be planed. We look forward to receiving many submissions. Short (2-4 pages) and full (5-10 pages) papers are acceptable. Tours around the historical and beautiful city of Alexandria are also planned. We look forward to seeing you in Alexandria!
